Awajishima boasts a long and prestigious culinary history: from antiquity through to the 12th century, the island enjoyed special status as a producer of food for the Imperial Court. These days it is known as one of the main sources of the livestock used for Japan’s world-famous Kobe and Matsusaka beef varieties, and at the more modest end of the spectrum for its tamanegi round onions. A wide range of eateries across Awajishima make great use of these and other local produce.

Awaji beef and pork skewers at Yurari Yura Izakaya in Sumoto City
Awaji beef and pork skewers at Yurari Yura Izakaya in Sumoto City
In this friendly and laidback izakaya, there is a charming way of placing an order: diners blow into a conch shell taken from the surrounding sea to summon over a member of staff. Mingle with locals at the counter, or make it a more intimate occasion inside one of several private rooms, and then sample our recommendation of cubed rare steak or pork belly, both grilled and served kushi style on skewers. The former uses Awaji’s famed beef, and various cuts of chicken and a range of vegetables can also be enjoyed the same way.

Awaji Burger at the Awaji Rest Area
Awaji Burger at the Awaji Rest Area
Awaji Rest Area, on the Kobe–Awaji–Naruto expressway, offers not only a superb view of the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge and Osaka and Kobe beyond (even more spectacular when seen from the facility’s Ferris wheel), but also what is likely the most affordable way to try Awaji beef. The Awaji Burger is distinct in using shredded beef rather than the usual patty, and at the rest area’s compact eatery Awa-be, a regular sized burger stuffed with plenty of the revered meat, together with lettuce and Awaji’s noted onion, can be enjoyed for just 500 yen.

Tamanegi pizza at Fukura Marche, Minamiawaji City
Tamanegi pizza at Fukura Marche, Minamiawaji City
Awaji beef might be more well known, but locally the area also prides itself on its tamanegi (round onion), which is moderately soft and sweet. Tamanegi pizza is one of the specialties at Fukura Marche, a shop cafe that sells locally produced vegetables and fish and looks out onto Fukura Bay. At heart, this is a marinara pizza using shirasu (tiny young whitebait), but Awaji onion deservedly takes top billing, once it is heaped on top, both raw and fried. The onion element of the pizza is all you-can eat, so pile it high!

Fukura Marche also offers its own singular take on the Awaji Burger. Here the Awaji beef is prepared as a mince cutlet, which is then served in a bun made with pizza dough: a must try combination of succulence and puffiness.
