Amerikamura in Osaka

  • Amerikamura, or “Amemura”as it is more often called, is Osaka’s answer to Harajuku in Tokyo, in that it is one of the main centers for youth and fashion culture in the city. The name translates as “American village,”as many stores in the area once focused on importing western goods, but it is now a hub for all kinds of subcultures and fashions—hip hop, reggae, punk, lolita, street, and pretty much any other style you can think of. Despite being a relatively compact area stretching just a few blocks, Amemura is packed full of cool shops, bars, clubs, cafes, and restaurants, making it one of the most exciting corners of Osaka and something of a must-see.

Other than the small replica of the Statue of Liberty (see if you can spot it), Amemura’s most famous landmark is undoubtedly Triangle Park, calledSankakukoen in Japanese. This tiny concrete park is theplace to hang out and a great people-watching spot, as there are all kinds of quirky and eclectic styles on display; there’sa convenience store right next to itfor drinks and snacks. Come Halloween the area is packed with revelers in fancy dress for what is probably one of the biggest parties in the country, not to be missed if you are in town.

Amemura is easily reached on foot if you are in the minami (south) area of Osaka; it is a five-minute walk northwest from the popular tourist spots of Dotonbori and Namba, and just a five-minute stroll directly west (crossing the tree-lined Midosuji Boulevard) of Shinsaibashi and the famous covered shopping street. It is also only fiveminutes from Yotsubashi Station on the Yotsubashi subway line.
