Opened in 1994, the museum is housed inside the old red brick weaving mill, that Mr Sakichi Toyoda first begun operations as a producer of textiles and researcher of textile machinery back in 1911. If you’re lucky, upon arrival you will be serenaded by a violin-playing robot as you enter the lobby for the south reception area (performances are scheduled five times a day).

Once you have purchased entry tickets, you can make your way through to the Textile Machinery Pavilion that is dedicated to the history of ‘Toyoda’ as a textile machinery company – the present-day name of Toyota wasn’t used until some years later. Throughout the Textile Machinery Pavilion are various booths showcasing the history and technology of Toyoda as a producer of both textile machinery and the technology used to spin various cottons. Most booths have friendly, helpful staff who are ready to demonstrate the equipment and give detailed explanations of their workings, often in English as well as Japanese.

When you are done in the Textile Machinery Pavilion, you cross into the second half of the museum, the Automobile Pavilion, where you can learn all about Toyota (notice the name changes here) as a manufacturer of automobiles, a venture that begun when Mr. Sakichi Toyoda’s son, Kiichiro Toyoda established the company in 1937. A series of easy-to-understand displays are presented in chronological order detailing the long, and often times difficult path the company went down before they were recognized as a serious player in the world of automotive technology. A highlight in this second part of the museum is the extensive historic collection of Toyota motor vehicles presented alongside one another in a large hall, with some of their most iconic models on display. Also featured are the fascinating high-tech robots that are used by Toyota in their manufacturing plants to assemble their vehicles.
