Getting Around Aichi

Nagoya Station

Given that it's one of the city’s main transport hubs, there’s a very likely chance that if you spend some time in Nagoya you’ll be spending a little time here at Nagoya Station. It’s one of the busiest stations in the country. Home to twin towers that soar at a massive 50 stories high, the station is also home to the Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central) headquarters as well as a broad selection of retail and food outlets. The station services a number of lines including the Tokaido Shinkansen, the Meitetsu Railways, which travel through Aichi and Gifu Prefectures, the Aonami Line and the Nagoya Subway and city buses. If you want to get around Aichi Prefecture, this is your first point of call.

Ride the Nagoya Shinkansen

The Tokaido Shinkansen is the bullet train that services the Nagoya area. It connects Japan’s major cities with one another, including Tokyo, Yokohama, Nagoya, Osaka, and Kyoto, making it an incredibly important network. Opening in 1964, this was Japan’s very first high speed rail line. The name of the shinkansen is a reference to the Tokaido road, which connected Kyoto with Edo-era Tokyo.

Take the Nagoya Subway

If you’re looking to check out the local sights, then chances are you’ll want to ride along the Nagoya Subway. In terms of size, Nagoya is quite an expansive city, however the well-connected subway network makes getting around a breeze. If you combine it with the local bus network you’ll be able to see most of the city major attractions without any trouble. In total, the city has six lines. If you want to jump from line to line you can pick up a day pass ticket from the station, which is a very economical way to see the city.

Fly into Centrair Airport

For a more direct route to Nagoya from overseas, there’s always the option of arriving at Chubu Centrair International Airport. Located on the artificial island of Ise Bay, Tokoname City, this airport services a large number of international flights, connecting the area to China, Hong Kong, Korea, Taiwan, Vietnam, Hawaii and North America. Via public transport, getting to Nagoya city from here will take you around half an hour.

Island hopping by ferry

Off the coast of Aichi's Chita Peninsula you’ll find Himakajima, a quaint island affectionately named Octopus Island. Popular for its impressive beaches, relaxing resorts, excellent fishing conditions and incredible seafood, it’s worth visiting if you have the time. The best way to get to Himakajima is to catch the 10-minute ferry from Aichi's Chita Peninsula in Mikawa Bay to the island. It’s also said that this is one of the best places to try the infamous fugu (poison blowfish) so if you’re feeling brave, stop by.

By car

If you want to see more of Aichi but you have limited time, then it may be worth considering a rental car. There are plenty of rental car services, including a few at Centrair Airport, so if you’re travelling internationally this will be your easiest option. There are a number of highways that travel through Aichi including the National Highway 1, which is the old Tokaido road. If you’re looking to do a little extra sightseeing, consider adding a coastal drive along Mikawa Bay, Chita Bay, and the Chita Peninsula to your itinerary.
