Beppu’s Jigoku Meguri Tour is often called the “Hell Tour.” Beppu is famous throughout the country for its natural hot springs. Many of the onsen pools included in the Jigoku Meguri can reach nearly 100° C, so they’re much too hot to bathe in, but many of them include foot baths nearby. As a result of the high temperatures and proximity to the surface of the ground, many of these onsen hot springs release thick clouds of steam. Visit the Jigoku Meguri designated spots to see seven of Beppu’s many natural hot springs, from beautiful blue pools to murky red pools.

Natural hot springs are one of Beppu’s biggest draws and it’s turned into quite an industry in the area. There are 88 bath houses in the area, so you could really come here and do nothing but relax in the onsen houses across the city. If that sounds like something you’d like to do, you should consider becoming an “onsen master.”

If you go to the information counter at JR stations, you can purchase an onsen passport for 100 yen. When you visit a bath house listed in the passport, you can get the book stamped. After you’ve filled your stamp book, you’re issued a certificate, get your photo added to a wall of fame, and even receive a commemorative tea towel.

Shopping streets are incredibly popular in most Japanese cities. Almost every town in Japan, no matter how small, tends to have an area designated as their shopping street. It’s a place usually filled with restaurants, bars, karaoke rooms, and drug stores. The Kitakoka Shotengai near Beppu Station is also a shopping street, but it’s a little more unique than most.

Built around 50 years ago, this shopping street has seen its share of hard times but has seen an upturn in the last few years. This eclectic set of shops sees a variety of visitors and has gained a lot of popularity. From record shops to cafes and restaurants, this bright shopping street is well worth a visit. If you’re around on the weekend, stop by and visit the flea market they host on Saturdays.

One thing most people don’t expect to see on their visit to Japan is hundreds of monkeys wandering the mountainside freely, but at Takasakiyama Monkey Park, that’s exactly what you can do. This monkey reserve protects some 1,500 Japanese macaques. While the monkeys are relatively tame, guests are advised to avoid touching them or acting aggressively around them. Tickets are quite affordable at only 510 yen for adults and 250 yen for children.

Mount Tsurumi is a mountain that overlooks the city. For 1,600 yen, you buy a round-trip ticket and take the Beppu Ropeway 800 meters up to a park area where you can enjoy the view. There are trails throughout the area and you can even get to the peak of the mountain at an elevation of 1,375 meters. Of course, you could always walk from the bottom of the mountain, but it’s quite a hike.
