Nightlife in Kumamoto City

Talk to the locals in Kumamoto City and besides mentioning the iconic castle and a few other tourists spots, they are quick to highlight that the best thing about the city is its chill atmosphere and its nightlife. They are not far from the truth so we’ll give you a shortlist of some of the best spots to enjoy a drink, live music events, or if you are up for it, a long night of dancing. You won’t need to travel far between locations since most of the nighttime entertainment is concentrated around Nishi Ginza Street and Sakae Dori, both in the Tetorihoncho District. There are exceptions of course, but these are worthy ones.

Voyager

Voyager is the exception on the list as it is located on the east shore of the Shirakawa River and in the Kuhonji District of the city. At this stylish and mellow bar, an American beer enthusiast and a Japanese DJ joined forces to create one of the city’s best spots to grab a pint of craft beer and catch a live music show and other artsy events. With an average of 30 different beers on offer, and a chance to connect with local artists during event nights, you’ll have plenty of reasons to hang out at Voyager. And if beer is not your choice for the night, a generous range of whiskies are stock behind the bar. Word of advise, ask the bartender for the Black Cat whisky; you won’t be disappointed.

Bar Corazón

In Kumamoto, there are a couple of go-to bars for foreigners and Corazón is one of them. This wooden corner shack which looks like it belongs on the side of a Caribbean beach is a Mexican-themed bar run by Alejandro and Hilary. One of the reasons that locals (aka foreigners living in Kumamoto) love to hang out here is the terrace that overlooks the street and is one of the summer hot spots for drinking and people watching. More so than the terrace, we love this place for the hosts, especially Hilary, who will make sure your night is one for the books and if you are up for it maybe an endless one.

Jeff’s World Bar

A couple of blocks from Bar Corazón is you’ll run into Jeff’s World Bar. This is the other half of the go-to foreign bars and it is like an institution in terms of nightlife in Kumamoto City. Located on the second floor of an inconspicuous building, this is the place to be if you want to meet both foreigners and locals looking to have a good time together. Jeff’s Bar has been operating in the city for over 18 years and such is its popularity that the staff at other bars nearby have worked here or are also regular customers at Jeff’s. The vibe at this local favourite changes every night and depending on the events being held; if you like big crowds, better to stop by on the weekends.

Bar Sanctuary

When you get the urge to hit the dance floor and move till the early morning, head over to Sanctuary. With several floors of entertainment options, the party at Bar Sanctuary is serious business. Open from 8:00 pm to 5:00 am, you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy the regular DJ event held here. The boys at Bar Sanctuary will make sure your glass is not empty and the music will have you dancing all-night long.
