If you’re traveling to Wakayama City from Osaka, probably the fast way to get there is by booking a ticket on the Kuroshio Express train. The train runs about once every hour. It stops at Shin-Osaka Station and Tennoji Station and rides on the train are covered by the Japan Rail Pass, which you should purchase if you plan on doing a lot of train travel in Japan. The Japan Rail Pass can be purchased in advance before arriving in Japan and a one-week pass costs 29,110 yen for adults and 14,550 yen for children. Without the Japan Rail Pass, the regular price for the journey from Osaka is 2,210 yen per person and takes about an hour.

Koyasan is a popular area to visit for tourists in Wakayama. While it is possible to get there using the Wakayama Line, it will probably take much longer than some other options. For example, taking the JR Line and transferring to the Nankai Line will take about 2 ½ hours, whereas a car will save you about an hour on your trip. Once you get to Gokuraku-bashi Station, you can take a cable car to Koyasan Station.

Car rental is a good choice if you’re over 18 and have a valid international driver’s license. Renting a car costs around 5,000 yen a day and can save you a lot of time if you plan on exploring the countryside. There are a lot of beautiful hiking trails in the center of Wakayama Province that aren’t easily accessibly by public transportation, so renting a car is a bit of a necessity for those hoping to really get the most out of Wakayama’s natural sights. The upfront cost of renting a car seems rather expensive, but it saves money in the long run, since you don’t have to worry about trains, buses, and taxis.
