Ueno Park is easily the most popular park in Tokyo, with over ten million visitors a year. Along with the beautiful green space, this area is a cultural center with some of the best museums in the city. It may be impossible to take in everything the park has to offer in one day, but you can try. Whether you go with a plan to see certain things or just want to show up and see what’s in the area, you can’t go wrong.

Ueno Park
There are a lot of cultural sights to enjoy around the park. Originally, the park was part of the grounds of Kaneiji Temple, which can still be visited at the top of the park. This temple was originally built in the 17th century and is noted for its massive five-story pagoda.
Ueno Park
The Toshogu Shrine is another relic of the 17th century on the grounds of Ueno Park. This Shinto shrine has remained relatively undamaged by Japan’s many famous earthquakes. It’s often recognized for its golden door and ornamentation. During certain periods of the year, you can pay a small fee of 700 yen to gain entrance to the garden of the shrine.
Ueno Park
When the cherry blossoms come to life in the spring, this area becomes one of the most popular destinations in Tokyo. For about two weeks, visitors from all over the area make their way to Ueno Park to see the 1,000+ trees. There is a festive mood in the air and you’ll find many families enjoying picnics and vendors selling delicious street food. If you’re a photographer, late March and early April is the best time to visit, as this is when the cherry blossom season transforms the park into a wonderland.
Ueno Park
There’s a large pond at the edge of the park called Shinobazu. This natural pond is a great place to walk around. Two promenades traverse the pond, giving you a chance to observe the natural wildlife in the area and enjoy the view of the park’s trees at a leisurely pace. On the shore of the pond, you can also visit the Shitamachi Museum to learn more about the area’s history.
Ueno Park
The park is also home to the Ueno Zoo, Japan’s oldest zoo. It was originally founded in the late 19th century and it differs from a lot of the zoos in Japan, as this zoo tries to feature animals in their natural habitats. There are animals from all over the world and there are more than 60 sections in the zoo. There are gorillas, polar bears, tigers, and many more animals to see. Children will especially enjoy the petting zoo area. The zoo is open from 9:30am until 5pm and is closed on Mondays. Tickets are only 600 yen for adults and 200 yen for children.
Ueno Park
To get to the park, all you need to do is take the JR Line to Ueno Station. The park is located directly to the west of the station. The park spreads out over more than 300 acres, making it one of the largest green spaces in Tokyo. For locals and visitors alike, a visit to Ueno Park is guaranteed to be an enjoyable day.
