There are eight main ponds each with different hues and features that change with the seasons. The biggest pond along the trail is Bishamon-numa where higher ground will give you the view of the emerald green water surrounded by the forest, with Fukushima’s impressive mountains in the backdrop. From here, the trail will lead you to the rest of the ponds, including Akanuma Pond which takes on a green and reddish tone during the winter, and to the remaining ponds beyond that.

If you’ve come unprepared, then make your way to the Urabandai Visitor Center; the starting point of your hike. Here you can rent the necessary gear, and be off in no time with the certainty you’ll stay atop the piles of powdery snow covering the ground. Aside from the rental service, the visitor centre offers an exhibition area where everything you need to know about the ecology of the area is presented, and where expert guides can set you in the right direction to have a safe and enjoyable adventure.
