Exploring the Goshikinuma Ponds

To get the best out of Urabandai, you should set aside at least three days to have enough time to enjoy all of the main activities on offer. With the first day of you trip dedicated to BACCS, the second day is a perfect opportunity to head into the snowy trails connecting the Goshikinuma ponds, and stop by each one to take in the splendour of their colours and surroundings.

There are eight main ponds each with different hues and features that change with the seasons. The biggest pond along the trail is Bishamon-numa where higher ground will give you the view of the emerald green water surrounded by the forest, with Fukushima’s impressive mountains in the backdrop. From here, the trail will lead you to the rest of the ponds, including Akanuma Pond which takes on a green and reddish tone during the winter, and to the remaining ponds beyond that.

To explore Goshikinuma during the winter and do so without getting stuck in waist-deep snow, you must gear up with a pair of snowshoes. If you’ve come unprepared, then make your way to the Urabandai Visitor Center; the starting point of your hike. Here you can rent the necessary gear, and be off in no time with the certainty you’ll stay atop the piles of powdery snow covering the ground. Aside from the rental service, the visitor centre offers an exhibition area where everything you need to know about the ecology of the area is presented, and where expert guides can set you in the right direction to have a safe and enjoyable adventure.

Skiing at Grand Deco Ski Resort

To round out your adventure packed stay in Urabandai, you should include a day on the slopes. Located right in the heart of Urabandai, the Grand Deco Ski Resort is a great fit for beginner to intermediate skiers, or those traveling with kids. Although the runs are on the short side when compared to other major ski resorts, the resort and the region it is in are famous for having the highest average snowfall in the region.
