Where to Go in Koriyama City

As we get off at Koriyama Station, our first stop is the 21st Century Memorial Park. Established in 2003, this park has been fashioned to withstand natural disasters, as it is equipped with reserve water and earthquake-proof construction. Starting here serves as a potent reminder of the impact the 2011 earthquake had on the region and the mindset of people worldwide.

Complete with a couple of ponds and large gardens, this park focuses on three things: flowers, water, and greenery. There are a few events held in the classrooms located onsite focused on green education. With classes ranging from general primers on how to live sustainably to building a real garden, it’s clear that the park’s mission is highly in tune with preserving the environment. Now, for our next stop, which happens to be inside the park!

Orange Pekoe Café

What’s more perfect after a stroll through the park than a nice lunch? Located in the 21st Century Memorial Park, you will find yourself virtually pulled towards Orange Pekoe Cafe. Especially considering the bright atmosphere!

You can relax here with your group and enjoy one of their 50 choices of drinks including tea and a variety of juices. Don’t forget to have the crepes enriched with produce from Konan Town and their “Asakano” eggs. The beaming orange of the Asakano egg yolk seems to be inspiration for the name - and rightly so! Their egg-filled crepes were rich with flavor.

Koriyama City Fureai Science Center

Once we’ve filled our bellies, it’s time to fill the mind. We’ll head over to the Koriyama Fureai Science Center, also known as the Space Park. There you’ll find a world record.

To be specific, the planetarium holds the Guiness World record for the highest planetarium in the world. Established on July 9th, 2001, the planetarium sits at 104.25 meters above ground. From this place close to the cosmos, you can enrich your mind with great lessons about the stars and the depth of the universe.

Kaisekan

After floating through space, it’s time to make our way back to Earth. Next up is the Kaisekan, the district office building, that highlights a collection of Meiji and Taisho era buildings. These buildings feature western elements that hadn’t been introduced in architecture in other parts of the country before. You can get a great overview of the development and rise of infrastructure in Koriyama City during your visit.

Most importantly, these Meiji Era buildings commemorate the work of the projects, Asaka Land Development and Asaka Canal Works. These businesses worked hard to lay down irrigation for the city and turn the land into a developed place for people to settle. Although it’s about a 44-minute walk from Koriyama Station, the education of the local history will make it worth it.

Nyohoji Temple

What is within walking distance of the station, however, is the Nyohoji Temple. Also part of a walking guidebook provided by the city, this temple hopes to maintain its “power spot” status among its visitors. Beautiful throughout all four seasons, this Buddhist enclave will have you leaving your ego at the door and absorbing the atmosphere. Reaching ever closer to that feeling of what can only be described as impermanence.

Historic Asaka Canal

Close by on the south side of the Hayama Park, you can find the Asaka Canal Hayama Waterfall. While it was dry during our visit, there’s no mistaking that the waterfall was a central part of the industrial history of the city since its inception in 1882. As a part of the Asaka Land Development Project, 500 former samurai families were put to work to build the 130 km long canal allowing hydroelectricity to provide energy.

From the 21st century back to the Meiji era, we’ve taken you on a walking tour throughout Koriyama City to the best scenic spots we’ve come across thus far. The pride of the city goes beyond the “commercial capital in Fukushima” designation and the concentration of department stores and shops though. It also lies in the influence the city had on spreading Meiji era architectural design and simultaneously holding a record for an acute interest in the wonders of space.
