  • Tokushima City has a lot to see and do, so you can maximize your time by hitting some of the hottest spots, and maybe take a few detours along the way.
In Japan, breakfast doesn’t typically consist of special types of food like in the West, so eating soup or noodles for breakfast is entirely normal. Go to the Tokushima Station area to try this neighborhood staple. This restaurant opens at 7 am and lets customers choose their toppings, sides, and soup to build their own udon. Prices vary based on what you choose.
After breakfast, head over to the Bizan Ropeway and take a quick ride to the top of Mt. Bizan. From 290 meters up, you can enjoy a perfect view of the entire city and take a short hike to look around. Peak visiting hours are in the afternoon, so it’s best to go in the morning and beat the crowds. You can access the Bizan Ropeway by going to the 5th floor of the Awa Odori Kaikan museum. Round-trip tickets are available for 1,020 yen.
Izakayas are great for sampling a lot of small dishes. Whether you’re starving after your trip to the mountain or are just looking for a light snack, Tokusan is a popular option among locals and is conveniently located just outside of Tokushima Station. This izakaya mainly specializes in fish, so you can try out their grilled fish or sushi, but they also offer other dishes, like yakitori and tempura.
After lunch, take a trip to see the ruins of Tokushima Castle, built in the 16th century by the Hachisuka clan. The castle’s ruins hold the story of Japan’s history, from the feudal era; the Meiji reconstruction, when it was partially dismantled; until the bombings of the city during World War II. Around the grounds of the castle ruins, the Tokushima Castle Museum gives visitors an opportunity to learn more about the castle and its history.
Tokushima Coffee Works has partnerships with some of the best coffee farms in South America to ensure that their product is always of the highest quality. Coffee lovers will enjoy the atmosphere and the smell of their freshly roasted coffee. After only a 10-minute walk from Niken-Ya Station, you can participate in scheduled coffee tastings and even purchase beans to take home with you.
After enjoying a cup of coffee, take a short walk over to Isuien. This restaurant specializes in a type of meal known as kaiseki, which is a traditional Japanese multi-course meal. The chef carefully selects and prepares fresh ingredients so that dishes complement one another. Isuien’s prices range from about 5,000 yen to 8,000 yen per person, so it’s not cheap, but guests agree that it is one of Tokushima City’s culinary highlights.
After dinner, those looking for a taste of Tokushima City’s nightlife can head to Awa-Tomida Station. About seven minutes west of the station, there are several streets that are home to dozens of bars that range from quirky to sophisticated. You can stop by the Anime Bar Ani Lab to have drinks served by waiters and waitresses dressed like their favorite anime characters. If you’re interested in hearing some local music, Funky Chicken doubles as a small music venue. After a few drinks, karaoke is also a great way to end an evening
