  • If you find yourself in Tottori be sure to schedule some time for a visit Tottori Prefectural Flower Park also known as Tottori Hanakairo, one of Japan's major flower parks. Opening in 1999, the park has become one of the area’s most popular tourist destinations, and considering the stunning population of flowers that inhabit the grounds, there’s no question why. Meticulously cared for, the sprawling 50-hectare park was constructed over a five-year period and houses attractions including a flower dome, a winding walkway and impressive views of Mt. Daisen in the distance.

    The real beauty of Tottori Prefectural Flower Park is that you can enjoy the area’s stunning flowers all year round, as there are both seasonal gardens and a tropical Flower Dome protecting some of the park’s more precious varieties from the elements. If you want really see it all, hop aboard the local trolley train that leisurely crawls along the grounds giving guests plenty of time to really soak up everything the many gardens have to offer.

    The area is divided into a number of different elements which come together harmoniously to create a diverse exploration of flora life both from the local area and across the world. The centerpiece of the park is arguably the Flower Dome. This towering dome, at 21 meters high, maintains a warm, subtropical like temperature throughout the year, making it the ideal place to explore the weird and fascinating tropical plants that populate the garden. Nestled here underneath the tall palm trees sit an impressive collection of orchids and giant hibiscus flowers.

    Attached to the dome is a covered walkway which weaves throughout the park grounds, covering different pockets of the park along its journey. No matter the weather you can soak up the impressive scenery unfolding beneath your feet. As you wander the one-kilometer stretch of walkway, keep an eye out for the park’s other many gardens including Flower Valley, the Herb Garden, the Garden on Water, and Mist Garden.

    Like the flowers themselves, the park also hosts a range of seasonal attractions. The highlight is arguably the Moonlight Flower Garden, an illumination event that features thousands upon thousands of glittering illuminated trees. It typically runs from dusk until 9pm in the warmer months from late spring through summer, and there’s a Christmas illumination event that runs at the end of the year too. Dates are often subject to change so it’s safest to check online before visiting.

    The park can be easily explored within a day, however if you do have a little more time up your sleeve, you can combine your visit with a trek over to the Mt Daisen which sits in the background. The most accessible station near the park is Yonago Station, serviced by a number of JR lines. From here you can catch a free 25-minute shuttle bus that leaves the Yonago Station bus terminal every hour and every half hour on weekends and public holidays. If you’re traveling by car there’s free parking available on site.
