If you made it this far down Honshu island then chances are you are interested in taking a look at the rushing waters of the Kanmon Straits, the stretch of water separating Kyushu and Honshu and the stage of several historical battles in Japan. One of the best ways to enjoy the scenic views of the straits while in town is by spending the night at Uzu House guest house.

A Stay at Shimonoseki's Trendiest Guest House
Uzu House is Shimonoseki’s contribution to the guest house trend that has been expanding across Japan. Housed within a five-story building on the edge of the Kanmon Straits, this marine-style guest house offers an interesting fusion of cafe/bar, shared office, and comfortable accommodation. Within its bright walls, a mix of locals using the work and event space mix with a diverse crowd of foreigners keen on getting a taste of the local lifestyle. Thanks to this it is not uncommon for interesting interactions to evolve during a couple night stays here.

In keeping with the dormitory theme found in many guest houses across the country, Uzu House offers the affordable bunk bed sleeping arrangement. But the options don’t end there; travelers can also choose from private (bunk bed) rooms for up to two people, a tatami room for up to five people, or for those willing to splurge a little, a deluxe room with the appearance of a one bedroom apartment complete with your own private view of the Kanmon Straits. Thanks to its central location along the water, all guests can enjoy the views of both the straits and some of the most popular sightseeing spots in the city.

As far as location is concern, Uzu House is perfect when it comes to exploring the must-see spots of the city. Not only does it give guests the front row view of the water and the big ships passing through, but it is also within walking distance of Akama Shrine (right across the street), Karato Market, Kamon Wharf,, and the Kanmon Tunnel, among several others.
For those that would rather check out the sights on two wheels, Uzu House has bicycles for rent at 200 yen/hour. Riding along the boardwalk towards the wharf area is definitely one of the recommended activities while in town. But even before heading out to take in the sights, we highly recommend an early morning wake up call to head up to the rooftop terrace and enjoy the awesome views of the sun rising over Kitakyushu and the Kanmon Bridge; this in itself is reason enough to spend at least one night at Uzu House.A Stay at Shimonoseki's Trendiest Guest House
After a long day of sightseeing and trying out the local cuisine, kicking back and relaxing at the guesthouse is not a bad idea. The cafe/bar here is open until 11:00 pm and while it does not offer any food it boasts a good selection of beers, sake, and non-alcoholic beverages. There is also plenty of space to mingle with other guests and the locals, or simply to sit down and plan your trip. The rooftop is also open at night and the scene of both Shimonoseki and Kitakyushu lit up at night is equally impressive as the sunrise.
