Where Hagi Honjin really hits it out of the ballpark is at its hot spring facility and this alone is reason enough to book one of their rooms, or if staying in another location, to take time out of your travel plans to try their onsen baths. Yunomaru is Hagi Honjin’s own spa which is surrounded by large beautiful gardens and equipped with 14 different types of baths. To truly enjoy all of these, you should give yourself at least one hour to slowly make your way around the spa hopping in an out of the unique baths.

The baths here are so unique that each one gets a different name. Women will get to enjoy the fall themed Momiji-no-Yu while the men get to relax at the floral Tsubaki-no-Yu. While there’s no set order to go around the baths, we recommend starting at the Gensen-no-Tsubo indoor baths to get warmed up before heading outdoors. The most impressive of the open air baths is the Joheki whose stone wall works as a replica of Hagi’s old castle town walls, making a soak in the Joheki feel like you’re bathing in the castle moat.

After this intense and satisfying round of hot springs, a perfect way to cap off the day is to take Hagi Honjin’s very own shuttle bus to the top of the hill. The shuttle bus is decorated to look like the famous C571 steam engine locomotive and takes passengers to the hotel’s private foot bath overlooking the city. For about 20 minutes you can soak your feet in the ancient waters while taking in the views of Hagi City before heading back down.
