  • The old post town of Tsumago in the Kiso Valley is situated along the historic Nakasendo route that connected Kyoto to Edo (modern day Tokyo) during feudal time Japan. The town was used as a stop over for warriors and their clans as they made the grueling trek up through the mountains towards Tokyo to pay respect to the Shogunate in the Edo period of Japanese history.

Today the residents of the town have gone to extreme efforts to maintain the look and atmosphere of the town during these old times, and many of the original guesthouses still serve as a places to stay for travelers from all walks of life. Making reservations at these guesthouses through can be tough as they are small and in high demand, they can also get quite pricey depending on the season.

One way to enjoy the town of Tsumago while also experiencing a traditional style guesthouse at a reasonable price is to look slightly further afield for accommodation. Plasse that aren’t located right along the Nakasendo, but in the mountainous landscape that surrounds it, are easier to book and cost a lot less.
