Gero Onsen's Retro Shirakaba Hotel

While Gero Onsen town may be brimming with onsen ryokan (traditional guest houses with their own natural hot springs), many of them are newly built and upper market meaning high prices tend to come with the territory. Shirakaba Hotel found in the very centre of Gero Onsen town goes against the trend eschewing any pretensions with its old style feel and hospitality all topped off with a traditional menu that is not to be missed.

For those arriving into Gero Station Shirakaba Hotel is one of the most convenient of the town’s guest houses located just a seven-minute walk from the station over the Hida River in the very centre of town. Greeted in by friendly staff, the unassuming European style lobby area is a good introduction to the hotel’s effortless retro style found in its decor throughout. Heading up to the guest rooms, the simple style fuses elements of Japan and the West. The main perk of the rooms is the views they offer from the windows; the Hida River and its neighbouring free outdoor onsen below promise the best of the views when they light up atmospherically at night.

Traditional dining and impeccable service are what give Shirakaba Hotel its good reputation. While many of the town’s ryokan offer meals in your room, dinner at Shirakaba is a more sociable affair with guests congregating in the dining room every morning and evening. Taking advantage of the Hida region’s fertile lands, the kitchen cooks up delicious traditional multi-course kaiseki dinners which comprise locally grown vegetables, fish dishes and a Hida wagyu beef option. The menu also includes dishes that you can cook up yourself at the grill set into your table. With two meals included in a booking, the Japanese-style breakfast is a filling set of small dishes all as beautifully presented as dinner the night before.

It goes without saying that the hotel onsen are a key feature of Shirakaba. Found both inside and outside there are a number of options for guests that are after a relaxing soak on an evening - or any time of day for that matter. Shared onsen are found on the top floor as well as an outdoor rotenburo bath on the roof where you’re guaranteed panoramic views over the town and surrounding Hida Mountains. Featured on the 1,300-yen Yu-meguri Tegata onsen pass, Shirakaba’s hot baths can also be visited as one of your three onsen visits of your stay. If your stay wasn’t already authentic enough, keep an eye out for Japanese guests dressing up in yukata and borrowing the hotel’s free-to-rent wooden sandals, known as geta, or have a go at clopping around in them yourself.
