Gero Onsen Gassho-Mura

Gero Onsen Gassho-mura is a replica town of 10 thatched roof houses, some of which are original buildings taken on from nearby towns including the famous Shirakawa-go in the north of Gifu Prefecture. Although the village is a reconstruction, unlike many houses in the original gassho villages, there are no permanent residents in Gero Onsen Gassho-mura so visitors can take a look inside all of the 10 buildings. The 800 yen fee (400 yen for children) gives visitors access to the two parts of the village: the thatched roof houses of Gassho no Sato and Saijiki no Mori, a woodland area made up of towering maple trees and sakura trees which bloom with cherry blossom for those lucky enough to visit in spring.

Gassho no Sato, home to the thatched roof buildings, is the main part of the village where you can peak your head behind every door to reveal museums, craft workshops, restaurants, an old puppet theatre, and even a hand and foot bath which uses the hot spring water from Gero Onsen. Among the museums are the Iwasaki House folklore museum where you can find displays of armour, traditional clothing, and practices from the time. The Enku Museum, although not housed in a thatched roof building, is still very much worth a visit. Dedicated to a monk from the 17th century, the museum exhibits an array of beautiful wooden artworks of Buddha produced by Enku. For a more hands-on insight into life in the Gifu mountains, head to the Hida Workshop where visitors are invited to create their own Japanese washi paper and ceramic art on homemade pots.

After exploring the gassho houses, visitors are free to take a wander around the nature-filled Saijiki no Mori and visit the two picturesque temples on the grounds where people go to pray to the cooking gods and worship the frogs of the region. The village is also home to two restaurants which serve up delicious Japanese food. Take your pick from freshwater fish dishes and ramen at Ichikura or noodle dishes at Chaya. Foodies may also be interested in the morning market just outside of Gassho-mura which runs between April and November with a special summer night market in July and August.

Gero Onsen Gassho-Mura

The Gero Onsen Gassho-mura is open between 8:30am and 5pm and is an easy trip from Gero Station. Jumping on the bus from the station to the village takes just six minutes and sets you back 100 yen each way. The buses start from 9:10am, then after 9:40am go once every hour until 4:40pm. Return buses back to Gero Station run every hour from 9:49am to 4:49pm.
