If you’re heading to Ibusuki, chances are that the main reason is to experience the famous sunamushi onsen, or hot sand baths, that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. The most popular onsen that provides the sunamushi baths is Saraku Sand Bath Hall, which provides sand baths right on the water’s edge as well as further inland when the weather is poor – both of which are extremely relaxing experiences and will be sure to rejuvenate the weary travellers mind, body, and soul.

Upon arrival, you are asked to strip all clothes and change into a yukata, a casual kimono that is often used as a bathing attire. You are then lead to the sand pits; it is here where you will be asked to lay on your back in the sand. A small towel is then placed around your head to stop sweat and sand from going into your eyes and mouth. It is important to ensure your yukata is properly covering your body so that no sensitive areas get burnt during the treatment.

The ‘burial ladies’ will then shovel the 50 °C sand on top of your body until you are covered up to your neck – a truly pleasant experience. The deeper your hole in the sand is, the hotter the sand will become thanks to the nearby volcanic activity. Although you may wish for the experience to never end, after 10 to 15 minutes it’s time for you to leave your sand pit and head inside to wash the sand off your body. After which you are then welcome to relax in the various other hot spring baths.

The sand baths are more than just a simple relaxation treatment. The weight and heat of the sand, as well as its high sodium content, is said to improve blood circulation, digestive problems, rheumatism, neuralgia, and to simply rid the body of toxins. Medical studies suggest the sand baths can be three to four times more beneficial than usual hot springs. Whilst these hot sands baths can be enjoyed by the young and the old, it is not recommended for people with high blood pressure, heart diseases, claustrophobia, and pregnant women.

Saraku Sand Bath Hall is a five-minute drive south from Ibusuki Station, or a 20-minute walk. It is open between 8.30am and 8.30pm on every day of the year, with last guests entering at 8pm. The entrance fee is 1,080 yen, a small towel for the sand baths can be hired for 120 yen and a larger towel for washing off will set you back 200 yen.
