Kita no Yatai

Tucked away down a cosy back street of central Obihiro, Kita no Yatai bustles with lively eateries offering a worldwide selection of cuisine from Japanese and Chinese to French and Mediterranean. While there is no shortage of top quality food in Obihiro, tracking down a good restaurant with authentic local vibes offers a little more of a challenge. The concentration of unique and animated restaurants along Kita no Yatai make it an instant hit with those that discover it. Central as it may be, accidentally happening upon this colorful street isn’t easily done due to its discrete location hidden down a back alley sandwiched between some of the more humdrum streets of Obihiro. While the area is quiet in the day, it’s when the sun goes down and the red lanterns are lit that this little street really comes alive. Head there for an evening meal and a few drinks for a typical Japanese dining experience that goes on into the night.

The culinary diversity of the restaurants promises something for everyone whether it’s typical Japanese tapas food at an izakaya, delicious tender lamb at Kohituji, fresh seafood, or a stewed up French boeuf bourguignon. While the non-Japanese dishes may not be authentic, many of the restaurants have mastered a unique fusion of flavors, throwing in miso and soy sauce with Western dishes. Along with the variety of cuisine comes a whole host of alcoholic beverages whether you’re looking for specially selected sakes and wines or just a good old pint, a little nosy down the street and you’re sure to find something to satisfy your cravings.

This lively hub makes for an ideal spot for carousing with locals in summer thanks to several outdoor seating options which double up as a cosy spot to warm up in winter inside or under the covered areas. The only drawback of hanging out on the local scene is the lack of English speakers and menus so it may be worth brushing up on some simple Japanese phrases; try out “Osusume wa nan desu ka?” if you’re happy to put your tastebuds in the trusty hands of the staff by asking for their recommendations. Don’t forget to add a polite “onegaishimasu” to say please!
