Itinerary - Abashiri by Bicycle

  • Kicking off at Abashiri Station, head straight to the Ryuhyo Kaido Michi no Eki just a 10-minute bus ride east from the station. Here, you can hire a bike for 1,000 yen for the day or 2,000 yen for an electric bike as well as an additional 1,000 yen deposit. Be sure to stock up on snacks and drinks for the journey at the Abashiri Corner inside the Ryuhyo Kaido Michi no Eki.

With the Michi no Eki ideally located along the Abashiri River, the best map-free route to stick to is by following the river west all the way down to Lake Abashiri. Five kilometers later and you’ve reached the top of the lake which holds some of the best of Abashiri’s attractions. It’s time to stop and get your caffeine fix at one of the cutest cafes around, Cafe Grass Roots. With a log house look from the outside, this homely cafe serves up good coffee and tea as well as a lunch menu and a selection of tasty desserts.

Once your energy levels are back up, head east and into the park that is home to the Hokkaido Museum of Northern Peoples and the Okhotsk Chipmunk Park. Depending on whether you’re planning to cycle all the way around Lake Abashiri or not, check out at least one of these activities as well as the Okhotsk Ryuhyo Museum to the north of the park and the Abashiri Prison Museum and Hana Tento flower park both to the west of the park.

Now that the sightseeing is out the way, it’s time to do some nature viewing. Make your way back towards Lake Abashiri where you can follow the road around the lake, with just a few detours where the road separates from the lake. At a total of around 55 kilometers, the full cycle from the Michi no Eki around the lake could take a good few hours so be sure to stock up on food, drinks (although there are of course a few vending machines and convenience stores along the way), and make sure you’re in time to take your bikes back by 5pm when the Michi no Eki closes.

If a 15-kilometer cycle is enough for you without the trip around Lake Abashiri, don’t miss out on the popular birdwatcher’s walk along the 7-kilometer Yobito Tancho Nature Trail on the lake’s northeastern Yobito Peninsula. For the serious cyclists looking to skip the tourist attractions and cover some distance, the route around both Lake Abashiri and the lower side of Lake Notoro will bring the cycle ride up to around 80 kilometers.
