  • When it comes to iconic landmarks, of which Kamakura has many, nothing is more iconic than the Enoden train line. This privately owned line is run by Odakyu Group and connects Kamakura Station in Kamakura with Fujisawa Station in Fujisawa, Kanagawa. Travelling along the coast of the area for a large portion of its journey, the line stops at most of the area’s prime sightseeing locations including Hase, the stop closest to Kōtoku-in with the famously huge Amida Buddha.

Travelling along the Enoden line you’ll be privy to some of Japan’s most scenic locations, not just along the coast but also as you weave through the more local pockets of Enoshima, Kamakura and its smaller neighboring towns. You can watch surfers tear up the waves at Katase Enoshima, get an insight into the everyday life of locals as the train treks through the residential backstreets, pass through the shopping meccas and then check out the iconic landmarks of the area all in one single trip.

Originally founded on Christmas Day in 1900, the line has been the heart and soul of Kamakura and Enoshima shuttling passengers between Fujisawa, Enoshima and Kamakura for over a century now. Even though after 100 years the area has changed a lot, and there are a number of probably faster transport options on offer, you haven’t really travelled through Kamakura if you haven’t ridden the Enoden line. From the scenic views, to the old fashioned style of operations it’s a uniquely local experience. For train lovers you can also pick up a souvenir of your ride. The stores located in Fujisawa and Kamakura stations sell cute Enoden-themed goods such as bags, towels, sweets and, of course, a specially made train set.

Overall the route is actually rather small, stretching along 10 kilometers. It is a single-track operation, however five of the route's fifteen stations feature passing loops, letting making bi-directional traffic flow effortlessly and preventing any major delays. The line is also sometimes referred to as Enoshima Electric Railway because all the trains that run along this journey are powered by 600 V DC overhead lines. For traveller needing to stay connected, the Odakyu Free Wi-Fi service is also available at all stations allowing you three hours of free internet per day.

If you plan on using the line as your main mode of transport when you’re in the area it’s worth purchasing an Enoshima-Kamakura Freepass. This ticket allows guests to travel freely throughout the area stopping off at all the key sightseeing locations. With this ticket you can also receive discounts a number of key tourist sites including the Enoshima Aquarium as well as a collection of restaurants and souvenir shops in Enoshima. From Shinjuku and return, the free pass costs 1,470 yen for adults and 740 yen for children. If you’re travelling from neighboring Fujisawa the pass is even cheaper costing 610 yen for adults and 320 yen for children.
