    Miso Soft Cream at Suyakame

Summer in Japan is synonymous with refreshing snacks, most notably the familiar swirl of soft cream. While unique flavors such as matcha and hojicha are available more and more today, miso soft cream is a less common sight. With two branches in Nagano at opposite ends of Chuo Dori, Suyakame is a miso specialty store with all sorts of miso-laced treats from its delicious sweet miso soft cream for 350 yen to its savory meat, fish, and rice crackers. Don’t miss the restaurant in the back whose regulars swear by its trademark miso rice balls.

At the very top of the lively Nakamise Dori sits Shinsyu Satonoka Koubou where you can find everything and anything chestnut flavored. This Japanese confectionary shop takes advantage of the abundance of Japanese chestnuts in the Nagano area which flourish thanks to the rich soil and cool climates, particularly in autumn. Open from 9am until 6pm the shop can get quite busy in the middle of the day especially at the weekend, but is worth visiting for its enticing chestnut soft cream and Mont Blanc.
