Taiko Drumming in Sado

Don’t be surprised if you suddenly hear the sound of taiko drums echoing around the forests of Sado Island. Kodo is perhaps the world’s most famous taiko drumming ensemble and the good news is anyone can join them and have a go at some of their drums.

The drumming group Kodo are perhaps the most well-known musical act from Sado throughout history. Founded in 1981, the group of around 60 members has attracted a strong following all over the world, and spend a lot of time travelling and touring around. Since 1988, the group has been living and working in “Kodo Village”, a 13.2-hectare area consisting of their rehearsal hall, residential buildings, a rehearsal hall, and a workshop and recording studio.

Their workshop studio is open to anyone, and everybody is welcome to join them if there’s space available, the maximum number of participants is limited to 25 at a time. Advance bookings are highly recommended. Even if you don’t intend to join a workshop, it’s worth stopping by and take a look at the impressive drums, hand carved from 600-year old Zelkova logs.

Kodo’s workshops are designed so that everybody, even those with no previous drumming experience what so ever, can join them and have a good time. They last for 60 minutes, and are quite physically demanding though. In fact, when we had a go we were soaked in sweat after just a few minutes, and left with sore arms the following day, no wonder the Kodo members are so fit! Despite the demanding exercise however, we had a great time. Taiko drumming is a lot of fun and we would love to do it again!

If you are a fan of Kodo, or just want something different to bring back home as a souvenir you can also pick up some merchandise such as CD:s, tenugui (Japanese hand towels) or notebooks with taiko motifs here.

Once every year, Kodo organizes a festival called “Earth Celebration”. It takes place in early August, and just celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2017. During the festival days, outdoor concerts, primarily collaborations with Kodo and various other artists, are held around the Harbor Market in Ogi. There are also various workshops taking place during the festival, including dance, flute and of course – taiko drumming. The festival is immensely popular and tickets tend to sell out fast, so make sure to book as early as possible if you intend to participate.
