Yamabushi Trail Tour
If you’re looking for an action packed way to really explore the incredible natural beauty of the Izu Peninsula you can’t go past an off road biking adventure with the Yamabushi Trail Tour team. Born from the want to introduce tourists with the local’s Izu, while preserving its beauty, the tours run through the west coast area, known as Nishi Izu.
Founded by avid biker Junichiro Matsumoto in 2013 the Yamabushi Trail Tour is one of the most unique and active ways to explore the Izu Peninsula. Having travelled across the world multiple times and with priceless experience under his belt, which includes a 23,000km off-road bike trip across the South American continent Matsumoto returned to Japan to work as a cook in Nishi Izu. While working in the area his plan to start a bike trail company came to life, and since its initial inception he’s gathered a team of local experts ready to help you uncover this stunning corner of Japan.
There are three different tour types to suit all levels of fitness. There’s the ‘Easy Ride’, which weaves along the pavement paths of Nishi Izu, here you can get a relaxing up close and personal look at the area while travelling from the mountain across to the seaside. Secondly there’s the ‘Fun Ride’ which is an old road mountain bike path that has been remade by the trail team. Finally for the thrill seekers there’s the ‘Epic Ride’, the weave throughout the rocky terrain of the Nishi Izu mountainside. It’s a true test of skill and endurance.
The tours meet at 9:30am and run for half a day, finishing up at around 1:30pm back at Nishi Izu, where your guides will helpfully recommend some of their favorite local restaurants for those who have worked up a serious appetite. Because the biking trail weaves through sensitive forest and private land visitors are privy to one in a lifetime sightseeing opportunities, but it also does mean that there are a few little rules and regulations that have to be followed. Picking wild foliage like flowers, mushrooms, and wild vegetables is not allowed, no matter how delicious they look. If you haven’t packed a whole lot of cycling gear, don’t fret, the trail tour can rent you almost everything you need in order to get on the road.
There are a number of ways to get the Matsuzaki Ocean Center, the tour gathering point. If you’re travelling from Atami take the Izu Sharuda bus for 50 minutes until you arrive in Matsuzaki. If you’re travelling by ship take the Suruga Bay Ferry for 65 minutes or if you’re coming by car take the Nagai Numazu I.C. or Tomei Numazu IC via Izu Long-term road National Route 136. There’s also a free shuttle that runs from around the Izu area, so to organize that call the friendly staff at the Yamabushi Trail Tour office as they’ll be able to help you out.
