A pilgrimage to Perry Road can be as short or as long as you desire. Once you get to Shimoda Station take the 20 or so minute journey by foot down the main shopping streets of the town along Route 117. Before long you’ll start to noticed latticed housing and cobblestone pathways, both Perry Road landmarks. Known as namako kabe the lattice style covering of some the older houses in the area is an iconic marker of old Izu architecture. The walls get their name from the sea cucumber (known as namako) thanks to their supposed similarities in texture. Running through the heart of the area is a quaint canal curtained by drooping willows making it one of the most photogenic locations in the whole peninsula.

It’s strange to believe but this humble city is actually one of the most important historic sites connected to Japan’s political relationship with the US. Admiral Perry and his Black Ships made their way to Shimoda’s bayside in the mid 1800s, where the harbour was granted as a safe place for the infamous American vessels to dock while diplomatic negotiations took place and an American consulate was established not too long after.
