Set amongst a pristine view of the surrounding countryside, the village gives visitors an inside look at the old thatched-roofed farmhouse designs. All the traditional houses have the same layout: a large cauldron on the floor in the open plan center, a large kitchen in the back, and a large central living area where everyone living in the large farmhouses would congregate and work together. In the back there is also an area for entertaining guests, and in front of that is the bedroom used exclusively for sleeping so there was no need for any light in that room. The buildings have no windows – this acts as insulation to keep them cool in the summer and warm in the winter.

The traditional village was built with the intention of preserving the symbols of Tono’s culture and special techniques developed from the time that were used in everyday life. The village guides, known as Maburitto – literally meaning ‘to play a protecting role’, act as designated preservers of the culture, and are more than happy to show guests around whilst constantly providing a steady stream of interesting facts and old fables famous in old Iwate folklore. The village is vast and includes some beautiful wildlife. Be sure to say hi to the friendly on site horses!

Once you’re done expressing your inner craftsman, why not replenish your energy with a nice traditional hearty meal made fresh from the little on site, old-style restaurant which serves some special Iwate dishes. A great option we recommend is the Hittsumi – a famous Iwate dish which consists of a hearty soy sauce soup base filled with seasonal vegetables and topped off with flat pieces of dough noodles. Another must try is Keiran – a traditional mochi based dessert filled with sweet red bean paste, the super soft consistency is a treat to the senses and a great way to round off a delicious authentic old Iwate style meal.
