    Madoka-san, the owner and operator of Camoshiba, decided to get back to her roots after living in the big city and restored a historical warehouse a short distance away from Jumonji Station. The result is two beautiful and cozy areas; on one side a hostel area, and a bar on the other.

    The hostel accommodates up to 15 guests at a time in three shared rooms equipped with comfortable bunk beds. Guests share the a dining room and kitchen which lends easily to morning conversation and practical shower rooms. The bar area, which is without a doubt the best part of Camosiba is open to both staying guests and locals who come to wind down mainly at the end of the day while enjoying some of Akita’s best sakes and delicious food prepared with locally grown produce.

    It is in the bar were the connections are made. The local farmers and creatives who hang out at Camosiba have been promoting Yokote for some time now and trying both to bring tourists into the town and to take their products beyond the borders of Akita and Japan.     One regular at Camosiba is Obara-san, a young farmer producing apples, peaches, and honey, and a new breed of cooking apples known as “Kurenai-no-Yume”. Besides his delicious produce, Obara-san opens up his farm to visitors providing tours of his apple orchard, including honey and fruit tasting. After enjoying a few drinks with the man, you can pay him a visit the following morning to learn more about his trade.

    After hanging out with Obara-san, you’ll want to stop by at Delicatessen & Cafeteria Kougyoku, a 10-min bike ride from Camosiba. You can reach Kougyoku easily by hopping on one of the hostel’s rental bicycles. Kougyoku is run by Takahashi family who take pride in their healthy meals prepared with local ingredients and their hospitable service. Kougyoku is famous in the region for its vegetable-packed bento boxes as well as the lunch meals served at their cozy cafeteria. If you are looking for omiyage to take back home, this is also a great place to pick up local dried fruits and sauces among other products.Takahashi-san is bilingual and besides running his delicatessen, he’s also actively involved in promoting Yokote and is a great point of contact if you want explore other farms beyond Obara-san’s.
