The famous Tsuru No Yu onsen is renowned across the Akita area for the natural healing properties of its water, and is one of the oldest natural onsen in all of Japan, dating all the way back to the Edo period. The onsen is ranked as one of the nation’s top 10 onsen, although many Japanese claim it should be known as the outright number one.

Part of the appeal of Tsuru No Yu onsen, apart from the incredible quality of the natural hot springs it houses, is the sheer beauty of the hot spring buildings and their surroundings. The thatched roof structures of the place date back to the 1600s. Tsuru No Yu is made up of a number of different baths, with the main one being a mixed bath allowing both men and women to bathe together.

If getting naked around others makes you uncomfortable, no need to fret as Tsuru No Yu allows visitors to wear a towel up until the very last moment before reaching the water, which is rather cloudy, thus once you are actually in the water nobody can see you naked. And whilst the main bath is mixed gender, there are separate male only and female only baths too.

And, taking privacy one step further, there are even solo onsen available where you can enter on your own and lock the door, ensuring complete solitude if one is so inclined.
