Unique guesthouses are becoming one of the prefered destinations for adventurous travelers to Japan and Akita Prefecture is no exception. Although these are far and few in between in the land of the kiritanpo, there’s one that stands out not only for the hospitality of the owner and the comfort offered, but also because of the water-related adventures that are available for guests and also for non-staying visitors.

Guesthouse Oga is run by Miura-san, a professional wood worker and a longtime certified scuba diving instructor from Akita City. By combining his passions for woodcrafting and watersports, he started his guesthouse on the southern edge of Oga Peninsula, on the shores of the Sea of Japan. The guesthouse is a spacious two-floor wooden building renovated by the owner himself and several curious decor items can be seen throughout the house.

On the first floor, guests are welcomed by a beautiful wooden canoe, SUPs, sea kayaks, and the woodworking shop. There’s also a cozy kitchen and dining area available open for guests and shared with Miura-san who although does not speak a lot of English, enjoys a relaxed conversation with his guests. Meals are not provided at the guesthouse but visitors are encouraged to pick up food at a near-by grocery store to be enjoyed on the handmade communal table with the view of the quaint garden.

The second-floor is a reserved for guests who can choose from one three tatami rooms of which one has amazing views of the ocean just a few steps across the street. The rooms are quite comfortable and can accommodate up to 8 people for 3,000 yen per person from May to October, and 3,500 yen from November to April.

If you have the option, definitely go for the room with the ocean view, feeling the breeze coming from the water, and sleeping with the sounds of the waves hitting the shores is a total pleasure. For those staying in the other Japanese-style rooms, there is a small room equipped with a vintage ottoman and a pair of binoculars so every guest gets the chance to enjoy the memorable view of the Sea of Japan.

Besides the comfort the big draw to this unique guesthouse is to enjoy the water and outdoor activities available for a reasonable extra fee. With the beach a mere few meters from the door, this is the perfect spot to enjoy the sea on this side of the country. Here you can choose to rent SUPs and Kayaks and paddle out on your own for an hour at time, get aboard a sea kayak or outrigger canoe and go on a fishing expedition with friends, or join Miura-san on a fun octopus fishing expedition with his homemade fishing rods not too far from shore. In addition to all this fun and with prior reservation, guests can also take part on one of several wood working experiences and take home your very own wooden decoration pieces. There’s even a chance to learn how to make your very own canoe although this will take longer the a couple of nights’ stay.
