Already a fixed part of the scenery, the IHI Stage Around Tokyo theater popped up on the Tokyo Bay skyline this March 2017. Hosting a number of Japanese plays, all offering English translation through super high-tech glasses, the theater promises exciting storylines, colorful costumes, and a 360-degree stage with a rotating seating platform in the center.

    While rumors still circulate about Tsukiji Market potentially moving from its current spot near Tokyo Bay, there is another reason to head to the area and it’s looking set to be around for some time. The IHI Stage Around Tokyo theater was opened to the public in March 2017 and is already pumping out spectacular performances almost every day. No ordinary theater, this Stage Around theater uses the novel idea of a 360-degree stage with a rotating seating platform so scenes transition from one to the next smoothly with incredibly realistic, 3D scenery that makes the sets next to none.

    The ever lively Gekidan ☆ Shinkansen theater group will be kicking off every performance with a modernized version of a traditional kabuki theater opening until May 2018. Not only will these opening scenes morph with the seasons but there will also be frequent changes of the shows staged at the theater. Working closely with a range of reputable directors, we can expect to see a variety of shows, such as the likes of Seven Souls in the Skull Castle, as well as some famous television faces on the stage.

    The unique performances staged at the theater are a careful fusion of traditional and modern elements of Japanese theater. Comical elements reminiscent of small stage productions are combined with costumes inspired by traditional kabuki and storylines based on popular manga which make the performances rich and diverse. Whether you opt for a 13,000 yen ticket or a side ticket for 12,500 yen, you’re guaranteed some of the highest quality performances around on this sky-high, 360-degree stage.

    Not only has IHI Stage Around Tokyo demonstrated innovation with its spinning seating and 360-degree stage of high quality performances but they have also introduced a long awaited solution to the issue of translation in the shape of “translation glasses”. Available at the front desk for a 2,000 yen deposit, these special glasses provide simultaneous translation which you can read along the bottom of the glasses as you watch the performance.

    A trip to the IHI Stage Around Tokyo is easily turned into an evening out thanks to its location among the twinkling lights of Tokyo Bay. With performances at 12.30pm, 2pm, and 6pm (there are usually only one or two showings per day), it’s worth hanging around the area a little longer for lunch or dinner at one of the numerous restaurants around Toyosu Station or combine it with a trip to the nearby Odaiba Beach and the Rainbow Bridge.
