Yubari Forest Farm Youth Hostel
A short distance outside the town of Yubari, among a cluster of white birch and hiba trees sits this family-run hostel and organic farm. Whether you’re travelling for business or pleasure, stopping here for a night or two will help provide a relaxing atmosphere where you can unwind and recharge. The quality of the freshly picked home cooked food is an added bonus!
The Forest Farm Youth Hostel is run by two sisters, who along with the rest of their family also operate an organic vegetable farm on the surrounding premises. Depending on which season you choose to visit, you can see and sample a vast selection of home grown vegetables and other produce including melons, garlic, pumpkins, tomatoes, eggplant, carrots, and potatoes. They also bake fresh bread on the premises. During the summer and autumn months the owners operate a small market stall outside the house where one can buy their produce to take home, for reasonable prices. All of the above and more are served to guests for dinner and breakfast, with vegetarian options available. In the evening guests are invited to sample locally made wines with the owners while listening to music in the large, airy dining room.
The Hostel can accommodate up to fifteen guests in cozy rooms that are built and decorated entirely from locally sourced wood, which gives the feeling of a remote log cabin in the mountains. Every room has decent wi-fi connectivity. Showers and baths are communal, but can also be used privately. Ample space out the front of the house means parking for cars, bikes and bicycles is no problem. Yubari City can be accessed in less than twenty minutes by car. For those visiting in winter the local ski resort is also close by.
The bedrooms and communal areas are strictly non-smoking, although there is a designated smoking area next to the dining room. One night at Forest Farm will cost you 4,100 yen (3,460 yen with a YH members card), evening meals are an additional 1,250 yen and breakfast will cost an extra 750 yen, these are both optional.
Forest Farm Youth Hostel can be accessed by car along Route 452, the turn for the hostel and farm is clearly signposted “Yubari Forest Farm” in both English and Japanese. Alternatively it can be accessed via a 15 minute walk (or five minute taxi ride) from JR Numanosawa Station or JR Shin-Yubari Station. A free pick-up service is sometimes available if the staff aren’t busy working in the fields.
