A welcome find in this rural area, Ferme la Terre has sat overlooking the town of Biei since 2004 and has become an established spot among locals and passing visitors alike. With an aim to offer its customers the best of local food, the owners work closely with a number of farmers in Biei, and elsewhere in Hokkaido, making the most of the region’s abundance of homegrown fruit, veg, grains, and dairy.

The right hand side of the stylish building, done out in a stylish stone and white theme throughout, is home to a cafe/restaurant with a view through to the kitchen and bakery where the chefs cook up a variety of wholesome dishes. Using healthy and natural ingredients as much as possible, the menu brims with Japanese-French fusion salads, and platters of cheese and free range meats served up on wooden boards, as well as an assortment of breads. While Japan may not be known for its bread, Ferme la Terre’s in-house bakery promises a huge variety: white, wholemeal, seeded, you name it, all made from wheat that was grown just down the road.

Just a short car ride from Patchwork no Michi, the cafe’s large, natural gardens blend into the colorful array of surrounding rolling hills which are worth a stroll around after lunch. Enjoy the warmth of the cafe or the spacious outdoor terrace to enjoy the stunning views which are even more special if you can make it for dinner at sunset.

Impressed by your 100% Hokkaido lunch? Head over to the shop before you leave for more locally produced goodies, from every color of fruit and veg and freshly baked cakes to dressings and pickles. The homemade cakes are cooked up in the Ferme la Terre bakery and make for unique Hokkaido souvenirs with corn Patchwork Hill biscuits, butter pound cake, and sunflower cookies. As one of the main producers of dairy in Japan, this is also the place to stock up on the less common milky Japanese desserts and cheeses.
