Getting Around Okayama

The spine of the public transportation network in Okayama consists of two tram lines - the Higashiyama Line and the Seikibashi Line. Both start at JR Okayama station and serve the eastern part of the city. The Higashiyama line crosses the Asahi River, and terminates near the hill of Sozan, while the Seikibashi Line runs along the main streets of Momotaro Odori and Yanagawa-Suji. There’s a flat fare of 100 yen per trip, but if you plan to do a lot of travelling in one day, it might be a good idea to get a daily ticket that lets you do an unlimited number of trips for 400 yen. The trams are a convenient and efficient way to get around the city center. There’s also an extensive network of buses, primarily serving parts of the city that isn’t covered by the limited tram network.

Okayama has a system of rental bikes called “Momochari”, that is both convenient, fun and efficient to use. The flat topography of Okayama along with its many bicycle lanes makes it a very bicycle friendly town. To use the bikes, you first need to make an account at one of the stations with one of your IC cards. There are instructions in English and the procedure is quick and easy. Once everything is set up, you can grab a bike at any of the plentiful Momochari stands that are located all over town. They cost 100 yen per use OR per 60 minutes. If you plan to ride a lot, there’s a discount ticket available too, where you pay 300 yen for 5 uses. There are also monthly flat rate plans available, but we doubt that these will be of much use for the occasional visitor.

Getting in and out of Okayama

Okayama is a stop on the Sanyo Shinkansen, so getting to most other major cities on Honshu is a breeze. The ride from Tokyo takes around 3.5 hours and costs 17,540 yen as of summer 2017. Okayama also has its own airport, with several daily flights to and from Haneda airport in Tokyo, as well as a handful of other Japanese cities and a limited number of international destinations. The airport is located around 30 minutes by bus from the city center.
The only rail link between Japan’s main island of Honshu and the smaller island of Shikoku to the south, is via the Seto Ohashi Line. This line starts in Okayama and runs all the way to Takamatsu, with some trains connecting all the way to Matsuyama, on the western coast of Shikoku.

Getting in and out of Okayama

Okayama is also a gateway station for much of the travel on the Seto Inland Sea, with several ferry lines connecting the islands from the coastal regions of Okayama prefecture. The biggest of these ports is located in the town of Uno, around 1 hour by train (JR Uno Line) or bus.
