Gokayama Historical Village

Toyama’s southern region of Nanto is home to Gokayama and its Gassho-style houses which became one of the first of Japan’s UNESCO World Heritage sites in 1995, along with the prominent Shirakawa-go in Gifu Prefecture. Tucked away in picturesque valleys surrounded by luscious mountains lie the villages of Ainokura and Suganuma, which have been developed as a historical site for visitors. Some of the eye-catching houses in the region were built up to 200 years ago with the steep thatched roofs acting as a means of combatting the incredible amounts of snow that fall in the colder months turning the villages into a winter wonderland.

Tateyama

Tateyama, or Mt. Tate, is one of the largest peaks found in the Hida mountains cementing its status as one of Japan’s Three Holy Mountains, along with Mt. Fuji and Mt. Haku. One of the best ways to experience the Tateyama Peaks is via the Kurobe Alpine Route which is a 90 km-long trail running from Toyama City to Mt. Tate. With the option to go the whole 90 km or to dip in and out, the route passes by dramatic glaciers, natural hot springs and the Kurobe Dam. A more leisurely trip past the scenery to Kurobe Dam and Gorge is via the picturesque Kurotetsu Kurobe Gorge Railway. While The Kurobe Alpine Route is closed between December and April 9th for hiking, this is the perfect time to discover the region’s abundance of winter sports.

Takaoka

Although Takaoka may only be Toyama’s second largest city, it is by far one of the prefecture’s most culturally interesting. Considered a hub for local crafts, Takaoka has produced its own bronze, copper, iron and tin for centuries, as well as the chic Takaoka-nuri lacquerware and geometric-style textile printing. Copper from the area was used to create the 16-meter Takaoka Daibutsu in the center of the city which is one of the three Great Buddha statues of Japan. Not far away lies Takaoka Kojo Park which was formerly home to Takaoka Castle before it was knocked down in the 17th century leaving behind its pretty moats which become lined with a myriad of pink cherry blossom in spring.

Toyama City

The capital of the prefecture is Toyama City, whose station was recently added to the Hokuriku Shinkansen bullet train line. As well as being home to some of the prefecture’s best restaurants serving up excellent regional cuisine from seafood dishes to traditional Japanese sweets, the city’s pride and joy is most certainly the Fugan Canal Kansui Park. This waterside park offers a pleasant stroll along the canal with the water’s edge and its crossing bridges lit up in a rainbow of colors at night. Don’t miss the Toyama Kirari Glass Art Museum which offers incredible architecture from the inside out.

Imizu Kaiwomaru Park

Located along the northern coast of Toyama Prefecture looking onto Toyama Bay, Imizu is a small fishing city. While the number of activities on offer in Imizu are limited, the city attracts visitors throughout the year to Kaiwomaru Park for the Lady of the Sea. This large, white ship is docked along the bay opposite the towering Shinminato Bridge and towers over the surrounding tiered seating with its sails fully expanded just 10 times a year between April and November. Built in 1930, the ship has circled the world around 50 times. Although closed on Wednesdays, the ship can be visited any other day of the week to learn more about its history and the workings of the ship.
