Getting Around Toyama Prefecture

The varied sights of Toyama are vast and spread out over the prefecture so working out how to travel between destinations is a must. Whether hiring a car or relying on public transport, Toyama offers enough options to promise a complete trip around this fascinating prefecture.

  • The diversity of Toyama Prefecture is one of its main attributes. However, for anyone wanting to experience all aspects of the prefecture from the mountains to the coast there is some distance to cover. The reliable public transport in the area makes this relatively simple with trains and buses around the area as well as sightseeing buses for an easy and direct route to the main attractions. Car hire is also a simple solution and only marginally more experience for those looking for the freedom to travel to several areas as and when they wish.

The Hokuriku Shinkansen bullet train expanded its stations in 2015 to include both Toyama Station and Shin-Takaoka Station to its line. This has made it possible to head directly to Toyama Prefecture from cities all around Japan including Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya. This is particularly beneficial for anyone in possession of a JR Pass which is available to visitors to Japan for unlimited travel on JR services around the country.

Smaller towns around the area can be accessed by bus, while coaches will take you to more rural areas outside of the main cities. This includes the Kaetsuno bus which travels directly from Shin-Takaoka Station to Gokayama and its villages of Gassho-style thatched roof houses.

For an easy route into the Hida mountains including Mt. Tate, there are a number of routes that can be taken. The Tateyama Cable Car runs from Tateyama Station while the Kanden Tunnel Trolley Bus sets off from Ogizawa all the way into the Hida mountains. To experience the dramatic scenery as a day trip, the Kurotetsu Kurobe Gorge Railway is a leisurely train journey full of incredible sites through the mountains and across Kurobe Gorge and up to Kurobe Dam.

Traveling between the main cities in the northern part of Toyama is easily done with the local trains running between stations including Toyama City, Takaoka, Tateyama, Tonami, and Namerikawa. Toyama City has a network of local buses around the city as well as its own tram system, the Toyama Toyamako Line, which runs from Toyama Station all the way north to the Iwasehama, a port town along Toyama Bay. As the majority of Toyama prefecture’s cities are small and compact, there is also the option to discover the area by foot or by hiring a bike.
