    Tour the Hakkoda Maru ship/museum

Originally used as a transport ship back in the 1960s up until the late 1980s, the Hakkoda-Maru would carry trains across the 113 km journey from northern Aomori all the way to Hakodate, in the south of Hokkaido. Once the underground Seikan Tunnel was built in 1988, the services of the Hakkoda Maru were no longer needed, so the ship was reincarnated into an impressive local museum. For a 500 yen admission fee you can explore the well maintained interior of this hardworking vessel and learn all about Aomori’s marine and transport history.

Once you’ve filled your morning with everything sea related it’s time to head out to one of the city’s most iconic art landmarks, Aomori Art Museum. Located just outside of the city, the museum is a meticulously considered art wonderland. From the Sannai Maruyama Jomon Archaeological Site inspired architecture, underground display spaces and 8.5 meter tall and 6.5 meter wide Aomori Dog that guards the space from deep within its underground trenches, this multi-purpose, multi-level museum is a labyrinth you want to lose yourself in. The museum houses a restaurant, shop, community gallery, theatre, outdoor space, workshop, as well as a variety of exhibition spaces, so give yourself a few hours to really explore.

The most exciting feature though is possibly the store’s cider factory. Made of course using apples grown in area, you can watch the production process of the cider through the glass windows at the factory. Once you’ve seen how it’s made it’s time to kick back, take a moment and enjoy a glass or two before heading out to dinner and a show.

Finish with dinner and live show at the Ringo Bako Izakaya

As the hours roll deeper into the evening it’s time to head back to where the day started. Located next to the Auga Ichiba Market is Ringo Bako Izakaya, translating to ‘Apple Box’, this izakaya is a local favourite and the best place to fill up on food, booze and local music. With a kitchen overflowing with incredible local food it’s easy to overindulge, but be sure to save some space for city’s specialities like the famous Aomori scallops cooked with egg and green onions. As dinner-time picks up, chances are you’ll have the opportunity to witness a performance of the area’s traditional folk music played on a Tsugaru shamisen, the perfect way to unwind.
