Thinking about accommodation next to the ocean, in a secluded area with a private beach, and you could be thinking it is a pricey proposition and out of a budget-conscious traveler’s plan. Well, if you are traveling to the Nakijin District in Okinawa then think again because Musubiya Guesthouse awaits.

  • Tucked away on a hidden seaside cliff, Musubiya Guesthouse is the brainchild of Hioki-san, a former professional trapeze artist who decided to create a guesthouse where travelers could relax by the ocean and enjoy international communication by sharing the space with people from all around the world.

Musubiya is a cozy guesthouse sitting on the edge of a cliff, with ocean views on one side and mountain views on the other. At this rustic beach house, guests can choose from private rooms with futons or beds from 2,500 to 3,500 yen per person, or dormitory-style accommodation for 2,200 yen per person.

The private rooms are large and some of them have direct access to the yard on the ocean side. The comfort is such in these rooms that you are tempted to just hang out there during the stay. Besides the sleeping area, guests can relax in the living room equipped with comfy seats and a small library, chill on the hammock in the front yard, or wander freely around the yard and down to the private beach.

There is no food provided at Musubiya, but there is a fully equipped kitchen which even includes a vintage beer vending machine (fully operational, of course). This space is open to everyone, and in fact is where a large part of the interaction between guests occur. Every night at 8pm, Hioki-san and her staff host a potluck dinner where everyone is encouraged to participate with either their own recipes or with food from the nearby grocery store.

Guests who rather eat out than participate in the potluck can do so without a problem, although this is probably one of the highlights of staying here; the potluck is not only a good excuse to socialize with other travelers, but also perfect if you want to try food from other parts of Japan and around the world. Soon after the dinner ends, the fun continues and although it varies depending on the guests, you might end up singing around the kitchen table well into the night.

Of course, being in such an amazing seaside location, there as much fun to have in the water as at the guesthouse. The beach is a mere two minute walk from your room and accessible at all times during the day. From the beach it is easy to snorkel around the waters close to the shore and come close to the beautiful sea life in the area. There are no formal tours provided at Musubiya, but at times, the guests will set out on informal snorkeling adventures or even moonlight walks along the shore.

Besides the potluck, most of the entertainment happens casually and is improvised which is one the great charms of Musubiya. Staying here is on the one hand about disconnecting from the hassles of the world, but on the other hand about connecting with the traveler community, as well as with the pristine, untouched nature of this part of Okinawa. If you are open to the experience here, you will not only relax physically and mentally, but also walk away with lasting new friendships.
