If you want to get a grasp on the real and fascinating history of Okinawa, you can’t go past Ryukyu Mura. Also known as Ryukyu Village, Ryukyu Mura is a trip through time in the shape of a small theme park located Okinawa Honto, about 30km north of Naha. A reconstructed village based around the life and times of people under the rule of the Ryukyu Kingdom, it's a fascinating little world and the best way to get a true immersive experience of Okinawan history and culture. Beyond that of course it’s just a whole lot of fun.

  • Given its diverse history, Okinawa is very different culturally to the rest of Japan. It wasn’t until islands were invaded by the Satsuma domain, also known as the present day Kagoshima Prefecture in 1609, that the area even became part of Japan. Prior to its formation with the rest of the country, Okinawa was an entirely separate country, known as the Ryukyu Kingdom. The island remained governed by the royal family from Shuri Castle all the way up until 1879, when the kingdom was officially abolished and amalgamated with the rest of Japan.

If you’re more interested in watching than doing, then Ryukyu Mura also hosts a wide range of performances throughout the day. From traditional eisa taiko drumming, symbolic dances, sanshin concerts, parades to ceremonies recreations, there’s never a dull moment in the Village.

Once you’ve worked up an appetite, check out the local food stands and grab a traditional Okinawan dish. On your way out make a detour through the gift store to pick up some local goodies to take home.
