Getting Around Takayama

The JR Takayama Station is the main point of access for travellers entering Takayama. If you get a shinkansen to Nagoya, the JR Hida limited express train will take you into Takayama city in around two and a half hours. Alternatively, if you prefer, a bus is the most direct form of public transport to access Takayama, and the trip around the mountains is especially scenic. At the station you will find coin lockers, useful if you are only in town for the day and need to shed unnecessary luggage or drop off your day’s shopping before taking a stroll through the Higashiyama walking route.

  • At Takayama station, the bus terminal acts as the city’s transport hub for its many tourists. Buses run between Takayama and all the main sightseeing spots in Northern Gifu, from Hirayu Onsen to the UNESCO Heritage site of Shirakawa-go on the Northern border of the Gifu prefecture.Take a comfortable and affordable ride to Shirakawa-go, Kamikochi, the Norikura Skyline or Shin-Hotaka, all while experiencing the astonishing scenery that makes up the more mountainous parts of the Gifu prefecture. The Nohi Bus operates between most of the major cities, such as Osaka, Nagoya, Tokyo, and Kyoto.

Once you are in Takayama itself, the city’s popular locations can be reached by the Takayama City Line Bus. You can purchase a day long pass, which gives you unlimited travel on the buses for just 620 yen for adults and 310 yen for kids or you might want to buy a two-day pass, which can be useful if you’re just in Takayama for the weekend and are hopping on and off traveling from one attraction to another. However, Takayama is a particularly walkable city and most of the main attractions are within a 30 minute walk of the station. While it is possible to see most of the popular sites of the town on foot, we recommend that if you wish to see Hida no Sato folk village you take the Sarubobo Bus, as it sits upon a ridge on the outskirts of the city. The bus stops right in front of the museum entrance and runs every 20-50 minutes for 210 yen.

If you would prefer a more traditional form of transport, you can always get around Takayama by rickshaw. Every day of the year you will find rickshaw drivers all over the city, but your best luck is to try the area around the Nakabashi bridge, as this is where they tend to gather. While they are a little pricier than the local bus, they do provide a truly authentic experience, and the guides can offer extensive information (in Japanese, of course) about some of the town’s historic spots. Hara’s Bicycle Rental shop, open from 9am to 8pm, is only a five minute walk from the train station and here you can pick up a rental bicycle for just 300 yen an hour, all you need to do is ask one of their friendly staff. Additionally, many of the hostels such as Quality Hostel K’s, have their own rent-a-cycle service and plenty of parking for bikes.
