Cyclists planning to ride along the Shimanami Kaido would be mad to miss “Onomichi U2”. This combined luxury hotel and retail space has everything a serious cyclist might need.

  • U2 claims that they’re the first place of its kind that has been designed from scratch with cyclists in mind. Inside this stylishly renovated waterfront warehouse you will find a bicycle friendly luxury hotel, a bakery, a café and bar, a few shops selling everything from clothes to locally produced foods and of course, a high-end bicycle shop by the Taiwanese manufacturer Giant.

What sets U2 apart is the friendliness to cyclists. We surely don’t know of any other places where you can ride your bike all the way to the front desk and check in, and then bring it into your room and hang it on a bike-rack. The café also has a “bike-through” counter where sleepy riders can get their caffeine fix, without even having to get off their bike.

But U2 is worth a visit even if you’re not an avid bicycle geek. The restaurant, café and bar on the inside are all serving top notch food and drinks for surprisingly reasonable prices. U2 is also an excellent place to shop for souvenirs, as they offer a wide selection of products with a local connection. U2 runs their own line of clothes selling OMC branded T-shirts (OMC stands for OnoMichi City), as well as cups and other tableware with the logo of the hotel on them. You can also grab a variety of products made with locally grown fruit at Butti, the combined bakery and food shop inside U2, such as jam and soda made from lemons grown on the nearby islands of the Seto Inland Sea.

U2 opened in 2014, and has already been praised for its stylish architecture, tasteful interior and quirky concept by several art and design magazines and blogs from all over the world. And for good reason- a big modern complex like this surely stands out in a city otherwise characterized by its retro ambience, old shopping streets and hillside temples. Yet, the fact that U2 is located in an old waterfront warehouse overlooking a small strait and the shipyards of Mukaijima on the other side, makes sure that it doesn’t look entirely out of place.

Behind this spectacular complex is the Japanese architectural firm “Suppose Design Office”, based in Hiroshima (about 1 hour away from Onomichi). Other noteworthy projects by this firm include the quirky hostel Book and Bed in Kyoto, a combined library and hostel where the guests sleep surrounded by books, as well as the stylish bookstore Kusamura Books in Nagoya.

A night at Hotel Cycle in U2 will set you back from 18,200 yen per person per night.
