Fancy a cup of coffee in an old re-purposed bath house and shop for some local omiyage at the same time? Then you need to check out Yuyu, a café and shop located in a unique building.

  • One of the most interesting shops we came across during our time in Onomichi was Yuyu. This is an old bathhouse that dates back over 100 years called Yamato-yu (the old sign is still in place in front of the entrance). As personal bathtubs got more and more common in Japan after the second world war, many old bathhouses ended up in the red and had to close down. One of these was Yamatoyu, and for a long time this place didn’t see any use. But fortunately, the building itself managed to avoid getting demolished.

Eventually this bathhouse found some new owners, that decided to turn it into a combination of a café, a souvenir shop, as well as a shop selling locally produced sweets and snacks. The original interior has thankfully been retained to a large extent, and we really liked the old retro vibe that this place has managed to retain. Another detail that we found quite attractive is the opening in the roof that lets in some sunlight into the store, making it very nice and bright on sunny summer days.

The menu is quite limited, consisting of drip coffee and a selection of teas. Espresso lovers are better served elsewhere. The food menu is fairly traditional, with items such as tonkatsu (fried pork cutlet) curry, Ramen and curry rice. For the desert, they offer several different parfaits that looked glorious (we were too full after eating too much Onomichi ramen just before our visit to actually try it) as well as coffee jelly and a couple of different cakes. On top of this, they also sell shaved ice, something that sure will be appreciated during the sticky summer months.

In front of the store you will find some locally produced goods such as vegetables, and vinegar flavored with lemons from the Setouchi islands. They also have a small selection of coffee cups and bottles for sale.

In all, we really liked this place thanks to the friendly staff and the charming atmosphere that managed to strike the right balance between being a local corner shop and a café, in a very unique building to boot.

Yuyu is located at the middle of Center-gai the main shopping street in Onomichi. To walk here from the station takes about 10 minutes, and you will pass heaps of other charming shops and restaurants on your way here.
