Fushimi Inari Taisha

It’s not difficult to understand why this place is depicted so frequently – this is one of the most impressive shrines in Kyoto, especially when the late afternoon sunlight filters through the surrounding trees and reaches the gaps between the vivid red gates below.

Fushimi Inari Taisha dates to the 8th century. And became a place frequently visited by the imperial household shortly thereafter. From 1871 to 1946, it was one of the few Kanpei-Taisha, or one of the top-ranking government supported shrines.

The shrine was initially dedicated to the gods of rice and sake, but has since somewhat shifted and today the focus is more on bringing prosperity in business. It is one of the most popular shrines in Japan, being visited by around 3 million people every year during the New Year holidays alone.

Most visitors today tend to be quite content after walking through the “senbon torii”, the Japanese name for the long line of torii gates, located along a trail behind the main shrine buildings. But the entire shrine area extends much further than this. Continue past the gates, and you will reach the start of a trail that will take you all the way up to mount Inariyama, where you will find several other buildings that are a part of this massive shrine complex.

The hike all up to the top and back takes about 3 hours in total, as well as a few restaurants on your way up there, you will also pass several observation points where you can get a nice view of Kyoto.

The famed torii gates are in fact all the result of the large number of donations to this shrine. Donate 400,000 yen or more and you can get one with your own name placed here too. If your budget is somewhat more limited, perhaps it’s better to settle for one of the mini variants, on which you can write your own wish for luck before you hang it on among the hundreds of others that are located next to the main shrine building.

Fushimi Inari Taisha is located in Fushimi ward, slightly south-east of central Kyoto, in the direction towards Nara. To get here from the downtown area, catch a local train that runs on the JR Nara line or the Keihan Main Line.

On your way to the shrine entrance, you will pass a charming street full of street vendors selling street food, snacks as well as a myriad of souvenirs. There are also a couple of pleasant cafés and restaurants in the area that have a slightly less touristy air to them.
