Yume Nomad

Yume nomad is an old Showa-era love hotel that has been turned into a hostel. If you want quirky, budget accommodation in Kobe, this place will not disappoint.

  • “This place was actually run by my grandmother back in the day, but once she got too old to maintain it, it was just left as it was. Four years ago, I decided to open my own hostel, and after refreshing it somewhat, this is what we came up with.” The hostel owner Mayumi is somewhat shy but very friendly, and she kindly agreed to show us around when we asked her.

She tells us that she wanted to maintain the original details as much as possible, such as the kitschy wallpapers and the pink bathtubs, as these provide a unique experience, especially for visitors from abroad.

Despite the old age of the building, all the rooms are in good condition. The building has been carefully and tastefully refurbished, with many of the walls now decorated with art by local artists, hence the word “gallery” on the http://yumenomad.com/.

On the ground floor there is a spacious lounge area where visitors can hang out in either the chairs and sofas of one room, or on the floor of a Japanese style room where there are several small tables as well as a TV connected to several different retro video game consoles. There is also a big terrace and a garden, where smokers can get their fix.

The lounge area doubles as a café and bar, open to anyone during afternoons and evenings. The prices are very reasonable and on top of the usual drinks like beer and coffee, there is also a selection of home-made fruit liquors on offer.

Yume Nomad has already gotten quite a good reputation, with many rave reviews on several hotel booking websites, and the place is often fully booked during weekends and over long holidays. The success has encouraged Mayumi to open a two other new establishments, both located within a few minutes’ walk of Yume Nomad. One of these is Hostel Nakamura (http://nakamura.yumenomad.com), focused on capsule style accommodation. The building has three floors and a spacious rooftop terrace. She also manages a building where a few one-room apartments with cooking facilities are being rented out for groups and solo travellers that prefer that extra bit of independence. The apartments are primarily being rented out via Airbnb.

All of Mayumi’s properties are located in the Shinkaichi district, a somewhat shitamachi (working class district) of Kobe with a great nightlife and ample dining opportunities, as well as heaps of retro charm. The area has excellent access to the rest of the city, being just 10 minutes away from Sannomiya by subway.
