Himeji is a fairly small town that is suitable for a one-day or weekend trip. The city center is compact, and most of the noteworthy destinations can be reached by foot. Public transport consists of buses and a few train lines connecting the city and its suburbs to the neighbouring cities.

Shoshasan and Engyoji
This impressive temple, Engyoji, is located on top of the mountain, Shoshazan. The temple has a history dating back over 1000 years and the temple structures are very impressive indeed. The area is also a popular hiking trail, thanks to the lush forest that surrounds the temple, providing respite from the heat down in the city below. Thanks to the atmosphere and lack of modern infrastructure in the area, Engyoji has been used as a backdrop for several historical dramas and movies, both Japanese and foreign produced.

Kokoen
A beautiful garden park located next to Himeji castle. Although it was constructed fairly recently, it was built to mimic traditional Edo Period style gardening. The area is divided into several different smaller gardens, each representing a slightly different style. In here you will also find a small tea house as well as a flower garden. The park is open from 9am to 5pm from September to April 26th, until 6pm the rest of the year, and admission is 300 yen.

Himeji Station
The modern area around Himeji station stands out thanks to the interesting architecture that combines an unusually high number of LED lights with a park somewhat hidden underground. At night, the area is populated by many younger people, some practicing their dance moves or just hanging out.

Miyuki Dori
A long covered shopping street that runs all the way from Himeji station to the square in front of Himeji castle. Along the way you will find plenty of shops and a plethora of cosy cafés. One that comes particularly recommended is Hamamoto coffee, an old style “kissaten” where many elderly locals, some of them somewhat eccentric, gather during the morning hours, so it is a great place for people watching. The coffee they serve deserves a mention too, as it consists of a carefully chosen selection of beans from all over the world, ground and carefully hand-dripped in the traditional way.

Himeji Castle
The castle is the main feature of Himeji, and a famous landmark attracting visitors from near and far, largely due to the fact that it is the finest surviving example of traditional Japanese castle architecture. It dates back all the way to 1333, and is the largest and most visited castle in Japan. Since 1993, it has been a UNESCO world heritage site, and is also one of the most iconic cherry blossom spots in the entire country. It is open from 9am until 5pm during months of September to April 26th, and until 6pm the rest of the year. Admission to the castle complex is 1000 yen.
