Get Around Himeji

Himeji is a fairly small city of 500,000 people with a compact city centre, so perfect for exploring on foot. But in case you are planning on visiting some of the more far-flung sightseeing spots, or want to know how to get in and out of the city, it might be useful to know a little bit about the other transportation options available.

  • Most of Himeji’s noteworthy spots are located in the city centre of Himeji, so these can easily be accessed on foot. Himeji City recently launched a project where tourists are given a free rental bicycle. Just inquire at the tourist information center at JR Himeji station for more information. The flat topography of Himeji in combination with its wide streets and sidewalks makes biking an excellent way to get around.

Himeji station is served by the Sanyo Shinkansen line, connecting it to major hubs such as Tokyo in 3.5 hours and Osaka in only 30 minutes. Hiroshima can be reached in 1 hour and 20 minutes, and a trip to Fukuoka takes 2 hours. Most of the local lines that pass Himeji station will most likely not be of much use to foreign visitors as they provide little as a means of actually getting around Himeji. They do, however provide good access to Akashi or Kobe to the east, or Bizen and Setouchi to the west.

Sanyo Himeji station is located a minute or two from the JR station and connects the city to the suburbs along the coast of the Seto Inland Sea. However, this line too is of little use when it comes to getting to and from the more prominent sightseeing spots in the city.

For local transportation within the city, you are more likely to be using buses. Several routes connect the station area with most other parts of the city.

The most useful bus route for tourists will be the Himeji Castle Loop Bus. This route connects the station to the castle, as well as Kokoen, Himeji City Museum of Art, Hyogo Prefectural Museum of History, and the Himeji City Museum of Literature. A single ride costs 100 yen, and a one day free pass is 300 yen.

On the outskirts of the city, the Himeji cable car connects the top of Mt. Shosha with the bus stop. If you are planning to visit the Engyoji temple, this is a convenient way to get there.
