Marunouchi isn’t where your average tourist to Japan tends to stay. Aside from the luxury prices, it’s a more subdued, business-centric area without the nighttime lights and noise of places like Shibuya or Shinjuku. Even so, if this is the atmosphere you’re going for we have some suggestions.

    The Tokyo Station Hotel

which opened in 1915. This is classic luxury housed inside one of Japan’s most iconic buildings, with 150 guest rooms, some of which look out onto the Imperial Palace, but others that actually look inward to the renovated entrance dome of Tokyo Station, giving you a view of passengers as they rush in and out of the gates. Though there are many luxury hotels in the area, this is the most interesting in terms of history, architecture, and most certainly location.

    Palace Hotel

A perfect blend of both traditional Japanese style and modern architecture, the Palace Hotel is a
luxury hotel just across from the Imperial Palace, giving beautiful views of the grounds. Completely reconstructed in 2012, the hotel still holds on to history including the original shigaraki tiles from the previous building built in 1961, as well as the original bar counter. This is the third incarnation of the hotel, the first of which having been a government building that was
then renovated into a hotel for occupying American forces after the war. Now it’s all about
luxury, with a number of high-end restaurants and the iconic Royal Bar with its dark wood interior and meticulously crafted cocktails.

    Oak Cabin Hostel

Though it’s a bit of a walk from Tokyo Station, even having hostel-style accommodation in this
area is a rarity. With reasonable prices in a typically expensive neighborhood, you’ll be situated
right on the edge of a channel that leads into the Sumida River, which is perfect to stroll along
during the day. Plus, at night you’ll see the yakatabune dinner boats coming down the river with
their red lanterns on. Perfect for backpackers, solo travelers, and just people interested in connecting with others during their trip.

Tenqoo, the hotels restaurant and bar, boasts an impressive menu of fusion Japanese French cuisine with the Tokyo skyline as a backdrop.
