    Imperial Hotel, Tokyo

One of the first hotels in Japan designed specifically for foreign visitors, the Imperial Hotel opened in 1890 across from Hibiya Park. Here you can experience its latest incarnation (one of many) built in 1970 and even have traditional Japanese tea ceremony performed in a beautiful tea room. This is a complex with a lot of history, so rather different than the luxury hotels of more recent years, and retains a lot of its Japanese charm, having been host to dignitaries and heads of state since the beginning.

    Tokyo Ginza BAY HOTEL

You wouldn’t imagine Ginza as a place to stay in a capsule hotel, but the Tokyo Ginza Bay Hotel is perfectly located by the Tsukiji fish market and close enough to the main area of Ginza that you can experience both quite easily and at a reasonable price. They have capsule rooms for both men and women, so if you’re traveling as a couple you’ll be separated for sleep, but for the budget traveler seeking a unique experience in this area, it’s hard to beat the prices starting at 3,000 yen per night.

This is one of the new generation of hostel-style hotels that has an interesting concept as well. Book Tea Bed is exactly what it sounds like, offering an incredible selection of books to browse and enjoy, organic food and drinks, and somewhere for you to sleep. Unlike a capsule hotel, these “rooms” are bunk beds with curtains to isolate you, and can be enjoyed by couples as well. Because it’s well-designed it’s good for travelers of all ages, especially those seeking to meet others during their trip.
