What to Eat in Ueno

The Ueno area is full of great places to eat. The area near the station has an abundance of charming smaller izakaya and tachinomiya (standing bars) popular among salarymen on their way home. Head over to Yanaka and you will find many shops specializing in street food as well as many budget friendly smaller traditional restaurants.

    Street food at Yanaka Ginza

The charming pedestrian street Yanaka Ginza has several vendors selling japanese street food such as Korokke (Japanese croquettes), Karaage (fried chicken) and many different kinds of fish- and meat skewers. The prices are very low so we recommend that you buy a bunch of different kinds, as well as some drinks, and snack on them while watching the sunset at Yuyake dandan.

    Turkish/Uzbek food at Zakuro

Budget friendly restaurant that serves a mix of Turkish and Uzbekistani foods. Their lunch menu will set you back 1000 yen, and gives you a chance to try many different dishes. Don’t get surprised if the quirky owner tells suddenly brings you a costume asking you to wear it, or even forces you to climb up on the big stuffed camel that occupies a corner of the shop.

    Sri Lankan Curry at Ayubowan

Nice restaurant and bar specializing in Sri Lankan Cuisine, with their highlight being the spicy yet delicious Sri Lankan curry. The high quality of the food combined with their friendly staff and a cozy ambience makes it a place we highly recommend. Lunch sets starts at 1000 yen.

    Sushi Bowl at Ameyoko

Ameyoko is one of the biggest outdoor market streets in Tokyo, and has an abundance of street food to choose from. Since many of the vendors at the market specializes in fish and seafood, there's also a good selection of food stands offering delicious -- and surprisingly affordable -- seafood here.

    Napolitan at Oka

Napolitan is one of the standard menu items on most japanese retro cafés, or kissaten. One of the better ones we’ve ever sampled can be had at Oka, a beautiful café on two basement floors and with a decor that hasn’t changed since the bubble-era. Oka is located next to the JR Yamanote line tracks, between Ueno and Okachimachi station. If you want a café experience wrapped in showa era atmosphere, it doesn’t get better than this.
