Shinjuku is one of those places you just have to experience for yourself. It’s a city of neon and energy, but also a bastion of fashion and culinary delights. It’s one of the most chaotic places in the world, yet you can still find a lot of intimate and friendly experiences.

Robot Restaurant
You’ve probably already heard about this. It’s a super over-the-top spectacle of music, dancing girls, robots, and flashing neon lights that, due to its bizarre, futuristic yet kitsch showmanship, has quickly become a staple of the capital. Japanese and foreigners alike come for a healthy heaped portion of “only in Japan.”

Party in Kabukicho
Though far less seedy than it used to be, Kabukicho still reigns supreme as Japan’s largest entertainment district. Everything you need for a fun night on the town can be found here: restaurants, bars, cinemas, shopping, karaoke, you name it. There’s always something going on 24 hours a day. Interestingly, this area used to be swamp and a duck preserve before it transformed into Party Central.

Relive scenes from Lost in Translation
What Japanophile hasn’t seen this movie? Bill Murray’s character stayed at this epic 5 star hotel. Even if you aren’t staying, you can still enjoy the New York Bar and Grill where the protagonists first meet. It offers phenomenal views of the city in a luxurious, upscale atmosphere that can be enjoyed at any time of day.

Shopping
Shinjuku is one of the main shopping destinations for locals as it’s home to the best department stores in the country. The names that come to mind for locals are: Isetan, Halc, Odakyu, Lumine, Mylord, Takashimaya, and “lifestyle store” Tokyu Hands, though the list is much longer. If you’re looking for Japanese fashion, this is the neighborhood for stocking up.

Toho Cinemas Kabukicho
Going to a movie on vacation may not be high on your to do list, but if there’s a highly anticipated blockbuster, this is one of the best cinemas in the city with a variety of viewing experiences to choose from. The gift shop in the lobby sells limited edition Japan-only movie memorabilia that’s bound to make a good souvenir. Also, don’t forget to look up. The world’s favorite kaibutsu, Godzilla, peers over the roof staring down at people coming and going.7
