Where to Eat

Since Harajuku caters to just about every age group you’ll find a really wide variety of spots to grab a coffee or a meal. First of all, sweets have become the main attraction of the younger Harajuku area, with all varieties of crepes and cakes on sale along the main street. Moving up to Aoyama you’ll find more cafes and low-key restaurants, so after a long day walking you won’t have trouble finding a place to sit and show down.

    Harajuku Gyoza Lou

If you like gyoza and you like them cheap and fast, Gyoza Lou is the perfect night-time spot for you. They come in both fried and boiled versions, with the a fair bit of garlic on the fried version (so careful on date night), and they’re only 290 yen for a set of six. You may need to wait in line a bit, but for gyoza and beer it’s worth it.

    Crepes

There are so many crepe shops in Harajuku now it’s impossible to name just one, but it’s one of those things you’re just supposed to get when you visit. Filled with cream, strawberries, bananas, chocolate, or many other options they’re perfect for walking around and, if you’re like most visitors, getting a selfie with on Takeshita Street.

    Ciao! Bamboo

One of Tokyo’s best Thai restaurants, the beauty of Ciao! Bamboo is that you can sit in an open dining space on street level on chairs very much like what you’d find at Thailand street food markets. The food is as authentic as the atmosphere, and perfect for both lunch and dinner.

    Kawaii Monster Café

OK, so this is where it gets a bit crazy, but no fear, the food might look insane but it’s actually pretty good. Of course, you won’t be spending nearly as much time looking at your food as you will the colorful pop atmosphere of Kawaii Monster Cafe, especially when the staff are putting on performances.

    Yanmo

Specialising in freshly caught fish from the Izu Peninsula, Yanmo has a simple menu of grilled fish that is very reasonably priced (especially for lunch), even though the interior seems like it would be premium. The menu is only in Japanese, but there are only five fish to choose from anyway so it’s hard to mess up(we recommend the salt-grilled mackerel). This is our favorite lunch spot for a healthy set of fish, miso soup, rice, and another small side dish, and great to not feel heavy as you walk around all day.
